Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story

From google video page:
Openly gay, experimental filmmaker Todd Haynes burst upon the scene two years after his graduation from Brown University with his ... all » now-infamous 43-minute cult treasure "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" (1987). Seizing upon the inspired gimmick of using Barbie and Ken dolls to sympathetically recount the story of the pop star's death from anorexia, he spent months making miniature dishes, chairs, costumes, Kleenex and Ex-Lax boxes, and Carpenters' records to create the film's intricate, doll-size mise-en-scene. The result was both audacious and accomplished as the dolls seemingly ceased to be dolls leaving the audience weeping for the tragic singer.

Unfortunately, Richard Carpenter's enmity for the film (which made him look like a selfish jerk) led to the serving of a "cease and desist" order in 1989, and despite the director's offer "to only show the film in clinics and schools, with all money going to the Karen Carpenter memorial fund for anorexia research," "Superstar" remains buried, one of the few films in modern America that cannot be seen by the general public.

Now finally you have a chance to see this piece.

Happy Turkey Day, America! -or- 1 of the reasons why you should love Miranda July

----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From:
Miranda July
Date: 22 Nov 2007, 00:06

hello, for those of you who are american, you now have a holiday. there may be times during this holiday where you feel a) not as happy as you had planned on feeling, b) like ripping someone's head off, or c) fat.
this is because it is a holiday celebrating genocide.
there may also be some moments where you feel pretty ok. this is because you don't have to go to work or school. also: the familial bond, it just won't quit.
and then there may be some times when you don't feel anything at all. try to stay with this feeling as long as possible. don't be afraid. and then, when you can't stand it any more, do a Learning To Love You More asssignment. there are three new ones up, no one has done them yet:
Assignment 67: Repair something.
Assignment 66: Make a field guide to your yard.
Assignment 64: Teach us an exercise.

all my best,
miranda

Signs Defiled!!!

So, sometimes when I'm walking around NYC or taking the god-forsaken subway I'm easily annoyed at the world and pretty much everyone in it. And then sometimes you see a brightly colored little boy hugging a penis in the snow and nothing else really seems to matter.

Check out this new site called Signs Defiled - basically pictures of really funny vandalism of public signs in NYC.

Guess who's back?

The Yellow Bird Project

One thing we do like is a win-win situation. The Yellow Bird Project are the definition of win-win. They get your favourite artists (cough, Wolfmother, cough) to do a doodle on a t-shirt, then they sell that t-shirt, and allllll the money goes to charity. So the artist gets to plug their chosen charity, you get a nice t-shirt, and the cash money goes to a good cause. What a perfect world.

In addition to Wolfmother, tees by Devendra Banhart, Stars, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Au Revoir Simone, etc are also available.

Softlightes residency at Spaceland; Los Angeles

One of my favorite venues in Los Angeles is Spaceland (or as Josh in our NYC office affectionately and mistakingly calls it, Sugarland.) and every Monday night in the month of November, our very own lovies THE SOFTLIGHTES have a residency here! They go on at 11p sharp, and opening up for them will be a fresh crop (different each Monday) of Southern California's best up-and-coming new acts go to the Spaceland site for details. Oh! And Mondays are FREE!!

Tucked in the windy roads of L.A.'s Silverlake neighborhood, The Softlightes are an apt act to set the scene for the holidays and California's version of "winter"...
Especially with their holiday single coming out soon... (Keep a look out for that one, we'll post details soon!)

PS) If you're thinking about dinner before the show - Leela Thai - just 3 or 4 buildings north or Spaceland on the same block has some rad veggie eggrolls & green tea ice cream. I just had some delivered tonight - yum!

Heima

WWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
Sigur Ros have just released a DVD called Heima, and it's probably the most beautifully majestic music DVD we've ever seen. The film documents a series of shows Sigur Ros played in Iceland in a collection of incredible, naturally cinematic and insanely mesmerising locations.

Putting it on is akin to bathing your brain in mineral water made of angel's piss.

You can get the idea from the trailer HERE.

Heart Made Of Sound - The Tribute Video

Ron from Softlightes sent me this video he found on youtube, a tribute of sorts to the Softlightes and the video for Heart Made Of Sound directed by K. Moyes.

It's pretty genius and reinterprets the stop motion from the original video but ALSO includes a sweet love story. Nice job Hankypankyfranky.

CAT AND THE EYE, RAT AND PEA PIE

Rugged explorers of cosmic rock Van She are set to return with a lurching space monster of a track called Cat & The Eye. Anthemic, stomping rock with elegant, otherworldly electronic touches, Cat & The Eye is on radio now and TV sooner rather than.. later.

A beautifully surreal video directed by Melbourne androids Krozm will be online very very soon but we got some flicks to tickle your naughties right here.

SOFTBOXES AND SOFTLIGHTES

As much as I'd love to post what I had for lunch, I just don't think it could be compared to that silence of the lambs shit Levins ate a few posts ago.

A few Sundays back Goetze and his enviable biblical beard took a walk down to Ultimo to pop in on the filming of The Microwave Song. The new Softlightes video clip was directed by Kris Moyes and we think it's got something to do with hands, gloves and glitter...

More flicks HERE, HERE and HERE.

LUNCH 01/11/07

Lamb Strips Pita from that place on the corner of Crown & Oxford St

Yesterdays lunch was a weekly staple. Lamb, vegies, tahini, chilli, pickles, hummous stuffed in a pita.

12 out of 10.

FYI - I probably won't be eating lunch today. Start worrying about my health now!
